The floating palace in Leith
For 44 years Britannia carried the Royal Family on nearly a thousand official voyages, from state visits to the honeymoons of four royal couples. Since 1998 she has been berthed at Ocean Terminal in the port of Leith, about two miles north of the city centre. You explore five decks at your own pace with the audio guide: the State Apartments and the Royal Bedrooms, the Sun Lounge, the engine room and the crew's quarters, ending in the Royal Deck Tea Room. Allow about two hours.
Getting there with the ticket
Britannia is the reason the Royal Edinburgh Ticket includes the Regal Tour: it is the only one of the three routes that goes to Leith. Board it at Stop GG on George Street or at Our Dynamic Earth after the Palace, ride past the Royal Botanic Garden and hop off at Ocean Terminal; the full loop takes about 80 minutes. Britannia works best as the centre of your second day - the 48 hours of bus travel count from your first ride, so a morning redemption on day one leaves the whole of day two for Leith and the Shore.
There is no time slot at Britannia. With your Royal Edinburgh Ticket you join the next available tour.
Single ticket or Royal Edinburgh Ticket?
A single online ticket costs £ 23 for adults and £ 11.50 for children aged 7 to 15 and young persons aged 16 to 21 from April to October; from November to March adults pay £ 22. At the door it is £ 25 and £ 12.50. Children under 7 go free - which is why the ticket does not pay off for five- and six-year-olds, see Is it worth it?. Adults who also visit Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse come out ahead with the Royal Edinburgh Ticket.
